Offline E-Learning Labs (E-LLs)

Digital education resources without internet connectivity

Our innovative E-Learning Labs bring digital education to rural schools without requiring internet access, ensuring that all learners can benefit from educational technology.

About Our E-Learning Labs

We've installed Offline E-Learning Labs (E-LLs) in 15 rural schools using RACHEL (Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning) servers and wireless tablets. These labs don't require internet and provide Learners with a digital library, videos, games, and exercises, all customized for learners with visual, hearing, and intellectual disabilities.

Embrace began working in 7 Ugandan primary schools in 2020 through a Fund for Innovation & Transformation (FIT) grant. The research looked at the impact of self-directed E-Learning on educational outcomes for Learners, with a special focus on girls and children living with a disability (CwDs).

Key Features:

  • Interactive offline learning
  • Tailored for special needs
  • Self-paced, student-friendly content

Project Development Timeline

2020

Embrace began working in 7 Ugandan primary schools through a Fund for Innovation & Transformation (FIT) grant. Initial research focused on the impact of self-directed E-Learning on educational outcomes for Learners, with a special focus on girls and children living with disabilities.

2023

Expanded the E-Learning project from 7 to 10 schools, giving access to E-Learning Labs to Learners from the 3 control schools in addition to the 7 intervention school Learners.

2025

Expanded our E-Learning Labs to 5 additional primary schools, bringing the total to 15 schools served. Alongside this expansion, we've introduced menstrual hygiene workshops and training for adolescent girls to make their own sanitary pads. Additionally, the Inclusion Workshops previously conducted in 2022 and 2024 are now expanded to include Learners, teachers, and administrators across all 15 partner schools.

How Our E-Learning Labs Work

1

RACHEL Server

A local server containing thousands of educational resources that operates without internet connectivity.

2

Local WiFi

The server creates its own local WiFi network that tablets can connect to for accessing resources.

3

Tablets & Learning

Learners use tablets to access learning materials, interactive exercises, and educational games.

Project Objectives

1

Enhanced Digital Access

To provide digital educational resources to 15 rural schools without requiring internet connectivity, ensuring that all learners, regardless of location or infrastructure limitations, can access modern educational technology.

2

Inclusive Learning Experience

To create an inclusive digital learning environment that accommodates learners with various disabilities through specialized content and assistive technology features adapted for visual, hearing, and intellectual disabilities.

3

Self-Directed Learning Skills

To empower approximately 3,000+ students across 15 schools to develop independent learning skills through interactive digital content, enabling them to progress at their own pace and explore subjects based on their interests.
